I wrote this song one afternoon as I waited for a streetcar on St. Charles in New Orleans. It had been hot and steamy and then started to rain. Lots of tourists in town so it took a long time for a streetcar with any room to stop for us.

I’m down on St. Charles, hoping for a ride.
Waitin’ for a streetcar, I must be standing on the wrong side.
I keep flaggin’ ‘em down; they keep passin’ me by.
I’m stuck on St. Charles again.
I know all the drivers and they know me by name.
Every ride’s different but the days all feel the same.
Yesterday’s sun has gone and turned into rain--
I’m stuck on St. Charles again.
It’s so hot out here, I could sure use a drink.
Good thing there’s a bar right across the street.
I’ve got a good friend who could save me a seat--
But I’m stuck on St. Charles again.
Here comes one up around the bend
That shiny headlight is looking like my last friend.
My man’s at home cooking supper for me
I’m the luckiest woman that could ever be.
Been workin’ all day, God you know I’m so tired
Cleanin’ up messes that other folks leave behind.
Days rushin’ past me like the cars on this line,
I’m stuck on St. Charles again.
Here comes one up around the bend.
That shiny headlight is looking like my last and best friend.
Well it’s getting’ late, and I’m still waitin’ for that ride.
Still hopin’ for a streetcar; am I waiting on the wrong side?
Cause I’m flagging ‘em down and they still passin’ me by.
Guess I’m just stuck on St. Charles again.
